| Halloween 1978 |
As a group we decided to choose horror as our genre to base
our film opening on because we all decided that this genre was the most
engaging to us as an audience and would be the most interesting to work with. We
discussed different styles of horror such as Slasher, Paranormal and Psychological
thinking about how we could base a narrative around one of these genres. To
gain inspiration we analysed various existing film openings such as ‘Halloween' and ‘The Woman in Black’ looking particularly at how the Mise en
Scene, camera work, lighting and sound were all appropriate to the genre and
how they were used effectively to engage an audience.
After looking at different styles, we decided to rule out
gore and slasher horror because we agreed this wasn’t appealing to us and would
be hard to film. We also ruled out horror involving zombies or the paranormal because
we wanted to keep our opening as realistic as possible.
We decided that we wanted to introduce horror in a subtle way
from a less obvious angle to make the story appear more shocking and
unexpected. Therefore we felt that psychological horror would be the best genre
to work with and it would suit our narrative most effectively.
